I've heard a lot about using smokeless tobacco as a harm reduction strategy.
My tastes run to chew - bite off a big piece, chew, and spit.
What are the health risks of this sort of tobacco?

Though traditional chewing tobacco with the resulting spitting is more visible than the newer non-spit formats, the health effects are roughly the same. Using any form of smokeless tobacco is much safer than smoking. It is an appropriate harm reduction strategy to switch from smoking cigarettes to using smokeless tobacco because you "reduce the harm" a lot. It is not 100% safe but it is so much better than smoking. Take a look at our FAQ section for various entries on the associated health effects of using smokeless tobacco.
