Increased prices on smokeless tobacco

Has anyone noticed that the prices on smokeless tobacco has increased dramatically? I used to get a 7 tin pack for $45 and now they are $60. This goes against any logic. If we want people to try and live healthier lives why are they increasing prices on a product that is not as dangerous as smoking? This really ticks me off as one of the reasons I switched to smokeless tobacco (along with health reasons) was that is cheaper too. A win/win situation. Not anymore.

I will leave this discussion to other readers since I am sure it depends on where you are. But the pricing issue is extremely important. In Canada, where we are, recent changes in tax regulations have almost priced smokeless tobacco right out of the market. This unintended result came from wanting to simplify procedures and have a basic charge applied to all amounts below a certain level. Though the companies had priced smokeless tobacco so that it was not as expensive as cigarettes, now that is no longer the case and the market is tipping the consumer toward the unhealthier product. We are hoping that changes because as you write, if you want people to do the healthier thing, the easiest way to do it is make it cheaper.

Yes I am from Canada. Specifically, Winnipeg. I guess the anti-tobbacco lobby always gets their way. According to them, it should be priced the same because they claim it is as dangerous as smoking. Too be honest, these people make no sense to me anymore. At one time their goals were noble. To help people who want to quit smoking live healthier lives. Now it is a crusade against tobacco no matter what the true evidence is about smokeless tobacco. Very sad indeed.
